Après avoir débuté au théâtre et rêvé de devenir auteur dramatique, Eric Linden poursuivit sa carrière en tant qu’acteur de cinéma. Il joua à Hollywood durant dix ans dans une trentaine de films, de 1931 (Are These Our Children ?) à 1941 (Criminals Within). Linden était un excellent acteur mais les producteurs le cantonnèrent toujours un peu dans les mêmes emplois d’adolescent ou de jeune homme ; il incarna tour à tour un délinquant (Eddie Brand / Are These Our Children), un coureur de jupons, un pilote de courses automobile, un artiste (Paul Vadja / I Give My Love) un journaliste photographe, la victime d’un assassin ou celle d’un kidnapper, un homme de loi, un accusé, un millionnaire, le fils d’un riche banquier ou un étudiant gâté, un militaire privé (Greg / Criminals Within), … Il apparut dans la scène de l’amputation dans Gone With the Wind (Autant en emporte le vent) dans le rôle du soldat blessé, atteint de la gangrène à la jambe. Son unique grande scène avec Vivien Leigh fut amputée également ! Après sa mort, survenue le 14 juillet 1994, son corps fut incinéré et ses cendres furent dispersées dans l’Océan Pacifique au large de Newport Beach le 19 juillet.
